Security and fire station at erfurt airport
The new security and fire station started operation at Erfurt Airport in 2000. This building houses the fire brigade control office and the airport’s security headquarters with appropriate communication and surveillance technology, as well as a first-aid facility.
The fire station offers a total of eleven parking bays (including one official security vehicle, three airfield fire engines, one powder extinguisher vehicle, one mobile intensive care unit, one crane, one rescue vehicle with rescue platform and loading crane, as well as one hose reel).
Erfurt Airport is classified in fire protection category 7 (on request 9) of the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), meaning 38,000 litres of water are taken onboard the extinguisher vehicles along with the necessary foaming agents and 3,000 kg of extinguisher powder.
The three Ziegler airfield fire engines (Z8) can dispense a total of 18,000 litres of water-foam mixture per minute from the roof jets, reaching distances of approx. 80 metres.
The extinguisher vehicles are also subject to the standard requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO (acceleration from 0 to 80 km/h in less than 24 seconds and a maximum speed of 140 km/h).
The FB service is performed in specially designed stations, such as the FB device workshop, breathing apparatus workshop, hose workshop/warehouse, as well as the fire extinguisher workshop for the maintenance of all fire extinguishers and extinguisher systems at the airport. There is also a special car wash hall for device and vehicle detailing.
A total of 55 airport staff, 20 of whom are full-time, ensure protection and safety in the event of a fire.
